What is Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy is the use of monochromatic light emission from a low intensity laser diode (250 milliwatts or less) or an array of high intensity Super Luminous Diodes (providing total optical power in the 1000-2000 milliwatt range) to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic and degenerative conditions and to heal wounds. The light source is placed in contact with the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue, where is interacts with various intracellular biomolecules resulting in the restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body’s healing processes.

Effects of Laser Therapy

  • Production and release of beta-endorphins, morphine like substances produced by various cells in the body that inhibit the sensation of pain.
  • Cortisol production is increased, which enables the body to combat the stress associated with trauma or the disease process.
  • improved cellular metabolism.
  • The protein building block of tissue is substantially increased.
  • Neurotransmission is facilitated.
  • Increased cell replication.
  • Formation of new blood vessels.
  • Cytokines and other chemicals enhancing cellular communication are released.
  • Immune response is stimulated.
  • Lymphatic drainage is improved.
  • Histamine response is positively altered.
  • Production of growth hormone is increased.
  • Stimulation of the healing processes is accompanied by relief of symptoms.

Laser Therapy Treatments Summary

The cumulative effect of transforming of light into biochemical energy requires sufficient stimulation in order to initiate response. Typically, 5 to 20 treatments varying from 30-60 minutes in duration are required. The end result of low intensity laser irradiation is the restoration of normal function of the cell unit. Treatment times can vary depending upon the protocols and pain severity, but in general actual laser exposure times are minimal with regularly scheduled treatments based upon the nature of the ailment.

Laser Benefits

  • Non-Toxic
  • Non-Invasive

LASER SAFETY AND REGULATORY APPROVALS

Regulatory approvals are required by Health Canada, FDA, and CE as a measure to provide a high level assurance that design and manufacture of devices consistently meets required specifications and to minimize the occurance of problems/defects.

Generally quality systems are designed to increase the assurance of safety and effectiveness of medical devices. Low Intensity Laser Therapy is an accepted therapy by Health Canada. The BioFlex System, which is used at Mulholland Massage and Laser Therapy Clinic has demonstrated clinical efficacy and compliance with all required safety standards and is UL and CSA approved.
